5 Easy Steps of Doing an Effective Box Compression Test

Box Compression Test

The box compression strength is mostly used for corrugated boxes to measure the resistance of the corrugated medium against external forces. The testing equipment usually applies a load on the top of a stack where the pressure is measured by applying load on the upper area and determining the resulting approximation that is used to indicate the strength of the corrugated cardboard.

A compression test is done by using a compression testing machine that compresses the material vertically. A load is applied on both sides of the material by placing them in parallel compression plates to measure its strength. If you are working in a corrugated box industry, then you definitely know that corrugated boxes are one of the major means of packaging that are used for safe packaging and transit of various materials and products in different industries. The corrugated boxes need to be strong enough to ensure product safety during storage and transportation.

Thus, with the help of the Presto box compression tester, you will be able to determine the box compression of various materials.

Here in this blog, we are going to provide you with information about how you can effectively do a box compression test. So, let us get started.

How to perform the box compression test accurately?

The Presto box compression tester is provided with two different testing platforms that allow the user to perform tests on the test specimen with a wide range of sizes. This testing instrument is best for providing accurate analysis of the compressive strength of the packaging containers and ensures stronger and better quality packaging containers. If you want to perform the box compression test, then you need to follow the steps mentioned in this blog.

  • Once you do that, you can operate the machine easily by plugging it into a 15 amp, 220 Volts AC switch. After that, turn the machine on and place the specimen on the platform in the center and parallel to the compression plate.

  • Bring the compression plate near the specimen by moving the rotary switch in a downward direction. Users can make use of the fast runner option to take the compression plate just above the test specimen with an increased speed of 50 mm/min.

  • Apply a preload of 1 or 2 kgf on the specimen to remove any air gap between the compression plate and the specimen. After applying the preload, press RESET and TARE to set the value at the peak load indicator to zero.

  • Commence the test by adding minimum and maximum load values for pass/fail analysis. Once the compression plates will start compressing the specimen, the load value will be shown in the indicator.

These quick and easy steps will ensure that you will get accurate testing results of the test performed. When you increase the load and the specimen starts deflecting, then you should note the deflecting value. This testing instrument from Presto is also available with a load indicator in which deflection of the specimen is also shown. This allows the user to perform the test in load vs deflection mode to analyze the amount of deflection experienced by the specimen on a particular load. In this way, you get accurate testing results of the specimen tested for compression.
